LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Ahead of Peru’s Independence Day on Tuesday, members of the local Peruvian community gathered in Las Vegas on Sunday to mark 205 years of independence with music, flags and traditions shared across generations.
The event was organized by Ayni Peru, a community organization that has hosted the annual celebration for years. Organizers said the gathering has grown over time and now draws members from other communities across the Las Vegas Valley as well.

“It’s 205 years that we’re celebrating our independence,” one organizer said. “So we’re having a celebration, a get-together with the Peruvian community, and we also invited other communities here in Las Vegas.”
A community thousands of miles from home
Ayni Peru estimates between 5,000 and 6,000 Peruvians currently live in the Las Vegas area. Sunday’s event featured red and white decorations, flag waving, and live music including Criollos, marinera and salsa.
“Here we are celebrating, listening to the music, the good music, the Criollos, the music of Criollos, and also the marinera, and the salsa too,” one attendee said.
Organization offers resources for immigrants
Gerson Allende, a member of Ayni Peru, said the organization has played an important role in helping him navigate life in the United States.
“Because we know as an immigrant, we need a lot of information to be successful, to improve our knowledge, and day by day, little by little,” Allende said.
For many families in attendance, the event served as a reminder of the community they have built in Southern Nevada.
“So we did have, you know, we still have some struggles, but thanks to countries like the U.S. and other allies, we have been able to accomplish a lot of things as a country,” one attendee said.
Ayni Peru is currently accepting new members.
