LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A woman with a lengthy criminal history who was charged with murder after a random shooting reportedly punched an inmate while waiting to be processed at the Clark County Detention Center.

Kayla Alery, 27, was arrested on Tuesday night in connection with the shooting death of a man sitting in his work van at an apartment complex near Spring Mountain and Fort Apache. Police said it appeared to be a random shooting and that they have “no indication at all” that the victim, a 41-year-old man, had any prior interaction with the suspect.

According to a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department report, Alery punched a jail inmate while awaiting processing early Wednesday morning. Alery was sitting in open booking at 2:53 a.m. while an inmate was cleaning up trays and trash nearby.

Las Vegas police are investigating a Tuesday homicide at an apartment complex.

The police report says that the suspect stood up and struck that inmate in the left jaw with her closed right fist. Officers responded, separated the two inmates, took Alery to the ground and secured her in wrist restraints.

The inmate who was punched was evaluated and cleared to stay in the detention center.

“I was just talking to a CO (Corrections Officer) to get sent over to get trays and all of a sudden, she just uppercut me and hit me out of nowhere,” the inmate said. “I mean, I heard she killed someone. I don’t know anything about her at all.”

Alery faces charges of battery by a prisoner. She has a Clark County court appearance scheduled for March 28.
