LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Las Vegas police are investigating a Tuesday homicide at an apartment complex.

An initial report said that it happened on the 3600 block of S. Fort Apache Rd.

UPDATE: Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Jason Johansson provided additional information about the homicide during an evening media briefing.

He began by explaining that the investigation falls under the jurisdiction of LVMPD Summerlin Command. He said dispatchers received a call of a shooting inside the apartment complex just after 4 p.m.

As officers were en route to the scene, they were advised that one victim had been shot and was near the entrance inside a white van. Police found the victim, a man believed to be in his 40s, and began to provide medical aid until medical personnel arrived on the scene.

The victim was taken to the hospital and died from his injuries. Police contacted several witnesses, according to Johansson, and received a possible description of a suspect—a white male with neck and facial tattoos and dark clothing, carrying “numerous bags” and who fled through the front entrance to the complex.

The lieutenant said that the suspect ended up being a female in her 20s, and police took her into custody without further incident. LVMPD Homicide responded to the scene and took over the investigation.

“What we know is that our suspect was inside the apartment complex,” Johansson said. “At this time we do not believe that she lives there.”

He added that the suspect was checking doors of cars, “likely to probably burglarize those cars,” according to the officer.

He added that the victim was present because of his job as a carpet cleaner and he intended to provide an estimate to a potential customer.

Johansson said that the suspect shot the victim while he was sitting in the driver’s seat of his van. Police have “no indication at all” that the victim had any prior interaction with the suspect.

“This appears to be a random shooting,” the lieutenant explained. The investigation is ongoing and homicide detectives are still on the scene. He noted that the suspect has a criminal record but didn’t provide any further details.

Anyone with information about the homicide is urged to reach out to LVMPD.
