LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A private jet overran the runway and crashed through a perimeter fence at Harry Reid International Airport, triggering major disruptions, airport officials confirmed to FOX5.
Officials said the Sunday morning incident shut down two runways, grounded dozens of flights and caused major delays.
Air traffic control audio reveals response
Newly obtained air traffic control audio reveals how crews responded as they worked to address the situation.
In audio from the scene, a controller can be heard saying, “Seven Golf, Sierra Golf, you okay? Tower 1, Golf, Tango, right turn, hold short of Runway 2-6 right. November, zero Sierra Golf, we got the emergency vehicles on the way now.”
A short time later, a controller said, “So, as soon as we get that figured out, I’ll have some information for you.”
Audio from another flight arriving at Harry Reid just after the jet overran the runway captured delays building as crews worked to determine what happened. Air traffic controllers began redirecting flights to different runways.
Wahlberg describes close call
Donnie Wahlberg was on board the jet and shared video of the incident on social media. In the video, he described how close the jet came to other obstacles before it stopped.
“I’m not sure how many fences we avoided, but we didn’t avoid the last one. But we avoided those trucks and heavy equipment, and the dumpsters behind that… God is good,” Wahlberg said.
Eight people on board
According to People magazine, the plane — a Dassault Falcon 50 bound for Toronto Pearson Airport in Canada — had eight people on board when the pilot aborted the takeoff
The ground stop has since been lifted. Travelers are still being urged to check with their airlines for any lingering delays or cancellations.
