HENDERSON (FOX5) — Valley teachers now have the chance to apply for a grant program to fund their classroom projects.
The Las Vegas Bowl Huddle, a community group representing the Las Vegas Bowl, visited Lyle Burkholder Middle School on Tuesday.
During the visit, the group announced a record-breaking $50,000 grant now open to local educators, courtesy of the College Football Playoff Foundation.
Melissa Wilkinson, an art teacher at the middle school, received a grant last year. She used it to get new tools to incorporate wellness into the visual arts.
“I love collaborating with other teachers to show that we’re also thinking about moving our bodies, staying healthy, but then also how can we make art to showcase that?” Wilkinson said.

Wilkinson said the grant paid for new tools for students, who took inspiration from lessons pulled from the PE classroom to create their pieces.
“Making our landscapes and then putting the movement of our human form into those paintings was super exciting for them,” Wilkinson said.
Tuesday’s event was part of the CFP’s Extra Yard for Teachers Big Week. John Saccenti, executive director of the Las Vegas Bowl, said it’s organizers’ job to use the platform to give back to the community.
“This is home. We just want to make Vegas a better place,” Saccenti said. “And what better group of folks to take care of and say thank you to than our teachers that work so hard, and sometimes they’re so underappreciated.”
Applications for the grant are open now through November 1. All public-school educators in Clark County can apply.
