LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – To mark the approach of World Water Day on March 22, the website Lawn Love ranked 2024′s most expensive cities for watering the lawn.

The study compared nearly 500 of the biggest U.S. cities based on three categories, looking at the affordability of local water bills and average yard sizes. In the final rankings, three cities in the Las Vegas Valley ranked in the top 12 most expensive.

According to the report, Las Vegas is #9, North Las Vegas is #10 and Henderson is #12.

The Las Vegas Valley Water District says households saved 3.1 billion gallons of water in 2023 after implementing excessive use charges.

The study considered factors that would increase the cost of irrigation, such as drought susceptibility and watering requirements for common grass types, among nine total metrics. The three most expensive locations are all in California: Merced, Bakersfield and Salinas.

Lawn Love noted that Cities out west — such as in California, Arizona, and Nevada — face among the costliest conditions for lawn watering due to hot weather, low precipitation rates, and common grass types like perennial ryegrass requiring more irrigation.
