LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Affordable health care is something many Americans struggle to find.
Nevada has community health centers to ease the burden. However, as FOX5 reported last week, one of the biggest nonprofit health centers closed, which left thousands of Nevadans stranded for care.
Patients reached out to FOX5 and said Silver State Health closed their doors without warning, but we found out hundreds of their patients were now being referred to Safe Harbor Medical to get affordable health care.
“It affects more than just the people who are indigent, or people who aren’t working or can’t afford health care. It affects people who get health care from their employers and they have a high deductible,” Tina Alicea CEO of Safe Harbor Medical said.
Alicea said the nonprofit is taking in up to 700 patients from Silver State Health after they abruptly closed their doors on Feb. 14.
“It’s a shame that they are out of business, but I’m familiar with their patient population so to me, that was what we could do in the community,” Alicea said.
They are helping out a community that relies on affordable health care by opening up schedules for the providers and fitting in patients where they can.
According to a Forbes report, over 13% of adults in Nevada have delayed their care because of the costs.
“That’s where the affordable healthcare and the community health centers such as Safe Harbor come into play. We have income-based sliding fee scale,’ Alicea said.
Safe Harbor Medical primarily focuses on medical care, but it partners with behavioral health clinics as well. Silver State patients going to Safe Harbor can get in within two weeks, depending on medical needs.
Since reporting on Silver State Health closing, FOX5 has received information from other clinics in the valley that offer affordable health care.
