LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – In Southern Nevada, water conservation is a top priority. That’s why the Southern Nevada Water Authority offers training programs for landscapers in Spanish, ensuring the people who do this work in our community have the knowledge they need.
The Water Smart Landscaper class covers an array of topics in Spanish – from irrigation techniques to proper tree care when converting a landscape from grass to a desert-friendly design.
“It is so important because the landscaping industry has a lot of Spanish-speaking people, so it’s more beneficial for them to learn these topics in Spanish,” said SNWA Public Outreach Coordinator Adriana Picazo.
The Spanish language course is designed for landscapers who are out in the field every day working directly on these conversions. Many of them say this is a great way to perfect their craft.
“I think it’s really important because a lot of our people in this trade, you know, Spanish is one of their languages and sometimes they’re just a lot more comfortable with a curriculum and the class,” said the owner of Tree Solutions and Tierra Escapes Pete Luna.
The class covers essential topics like how to prevent water waste, how to protect tree roots during conversions, and how to properly install drip irrigation systems.
Luna says those who attend the class say it makes a big difference and many leave wanting to continue their education.
“I know when they leave the class that they genuinely want knowledge to learn and they’re asking when the next class is,” said Luna.
For Spanish-speaking landscapers, this program is an opportunity to learn grow and apply the best water-saving practices while working in Southern Nevada.
The SNWA offers these Spanish language classes every month, along with additional workshops for the community, including how to maintain a water-efficient landscape at home.
