LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels’ momentum came to a halt Wednesday night at the Thomas and Mack Center as Colorado State defeated the hosts 91-86, ending a three-game winning streak.
The Rams controlled the game from the opening tip, jumping out to an 11-2 lead and setting the tone early. But UNLV fought back behind the hot shooting of free-throw, who nailed a 3-pointer to spark the arena and ignite a Rebels run.
Walter Brown’s turnaround jumper and Kimani Hamilton’s inside finish gave UNLV its first lead of the night. Gibbs Lawhorn extended the advantage with another 3-pointer, but the Rebels’ momentum was short-lived.
Colorado State responded with an 11-0 run to wrest control of the game. Despite the offensive onslaught, Gibbs Lawhorn kept the Rebels competitive with five 3-pointers in the first half alone, showing offensive firepower the Rebels would need to mount a comeback.
Both teams took turns at the free-throw line throughout the first 20 minutes, combining for 34 attempts in the half. By game’s end, there were 50 free throw attempts total.
UNLV entered halftime within striking distance after a Williamson buzzer-beater from deep made it an 8-point game.
The second half belonged to freshman Tyron Jones, who exploded for 10 points in the first five minutes to pull UNLV to within one possession. But Colorado State’s offense continued to roll, shooting 60 percent from the floor to maintain its edge.
The Rams withstood every Rebels comeback attempt to secure the victory and improve their record.
