LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Cybercriminals may use people’s subscriptions for their latest scam.
Here’s how it works: Users will get an email asking to update the payment method. It could arrive around the usual renewal date.
It’ll look legitimate and will usually include the company’s logo. It may offer a special deal to renew and it will provide a link to do so.
Unfortunately, that link will go to an imposter site. That’s where criminals steal personal and banking information.
Those who get this type of email should take a close look at the sender’s address. If it includes a long string of letters and numbers that make no sense – it’s a con.
Contact the legitimate company’s customer service to confirm the email, or simply check the account through its site or app.
Also, it’s a good idea to keep track of when subscriptions renew. Finally, always think twice before providing payment information for a transaction.
