LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Three new wrong-way driver alert systems on the 215 were damaged in a crash in March, according to NDOT.

The Nevada Department of Transportation says a part that provides power to the systems was damaged in the crash. The impacted locations are the westbound 215 off-ramp to Las Vegas Boulevard, the westbound 215 off-ramp to Warm Springs, and the 215 westbound off-ramp to Windmill.

NDOT officials said crews have been working on repairs that involved several agencies and contractors.

“The locations impacted by the recent crash will be undergoing testing and calibration very soon,” NDOT said Tuesday. “We do anticipate some upcoming traffic restrictions to support that work.”

NDOT does not have a timeline for when repairs will be completed and when the signs will be operational.

Expansion of alert systems

The department has been adding the flashing alert systems after a pilot project from 2020 to 2022. The systems are designed to prevent drivers from entering highways in the wrong direction.

In 2024, a camera on a wrong-way alert sign at U.S. 95 and Skye Canyon captured a car coming close to two other vehicles, while beginning to enter the roadway in the wrong direction. The car turned around after the signs began flashing.

Andrea Raney lost her three-year-old granddaughter to a wrong-way driver on U.S. 95.

“The ripple of any tragedy, it doesn’t just stop with whatever happened that day, it’s forever,” Raney has previously told FOX5.
