LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Las Vegas’ only giraffe, Ozzie, has passed away after an early morning fall at Lion Habitat Ranch.

“In the quiet hours before dawn, something startled Ozzie, causing him to stumble,” a Friday morning Instagram post from the ranch reads. “As we meticulously reviewed the video footage, we pinpointed the cause of the fall. Startled from his peaceful evening nap, Ozzie fought valiantly to rise, and our dedicated staff, owners, and veterinarians rallied around him. They worked tirelessly, providing round-the-clock medical care, their unwavering commitment a testament to the bond we share with our animal family.”

The post continues that employees worked to provide Ozzie with “round-the-clock medical care” before his eventual passing. Lion Habitat Ranch tells FOX5 they are waiting for blood test results to determine why Ozzie fell.

Ozzie was a 9-year-old male giraffe born at Tanganyika Wildlife Park in Wichita, Kansas. He came to Lion Habitat Ranch at 8 months old and 8 feet tall.

The ranch will be closed on Friday, August 2 in honor of Ozzie.
