LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Multiple UNLV football players (and their head coach) are included up and down the preseason honors list announced Monday by College Football Network.
The eye-popping haul is led by wide receiver Ricky White III, who was named Preseason First Team All-American, the Mountain West Wide Receiver of the Year and First Team All-MW. New quarterback Matthew Sluka, a transfer from Holy Cross, was tabbed MW Newcomer of the Year, MW Offensive Newcomer of the Year and MW Transfer of the Year along with Third Team All-MW.
Second-year leader Barry Odom was named Preseason Head Coach of the Year and senior offensive blocker Tiger Shanks was listed as the MW Offensive Lineman of the Year, MW Tackle of the Year and First Team All-MW. Another First Team selection, defensive back Cameron Oliver, was named MW Cornerback of the Year while senior Jacob De Jesus was named MW Kick Returner of the Year, First Team All-MW at KR, Second Team All-MW at punt return and Third Team All-MW as a wide receiver.
The fifth Rebel to be named to the CFN Preseason All-Mountain West First Team was senior linebacker Jackson Woodard. Running back Jai’Den Thomas was on the second team along with defensive lineman Alexander Whitmore and linebacker Marsel McDuffie. Safety Johnathan Baldwin and punter Marshall Nichols were All-MW Third Team while tight end Kaleo Ballungay, safety Jalen Catalon and defensive end Antonio Doyle earned All-MW Honorable Mention.
The Rebels will kick off their 57th season of football on August 31 by heading to Big 12 Conference member Houston at 4 p.m. PT on FS1 in the first of a school-record 11 national TV games. The home opener comes one week later when Utah Tech comes to Allegiant Stadium for a noon kickoff on September 7.
