LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department confirmed an officer “negligently discharged” his weapon Friday during a stop involving a reported stolen vehicle, and a suspect was taken to the hospital after a crash that followed.
Metro has released basic details about the incident but has not answered key questions about the officer’s conduct, the investigation, or what accountability will look like.
What happened
Metro police confronted a reported stolen vehicle just after noon Friday in a Summerlin neighborhood near Silver Sky Drive.
According to Metro, the officer got out of his car, pulled his gun, and began giving commands to a man and woman inside the stolen vehicle. Moments later, as the driver sped away, Metro says the officer “negligently discharged” his weapon, firing a round he did not intend to fire.
Metro says the stolen car then tried to push through patrol units blocking the roadway by ramming the police units before surrendering. The man driving was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries from the collision. The woman was also taken into custody.
No one was shot.
Unanswered questions
Metro has been asked the following questions:
- Is the officer required to undergo additional training or retraining?
- How long has the officer been with the department?
- Is the officer on administrative leave or working regular duty while Internal Affairs investigates?
- Will body-worn camera video from the moment the officer drew his weapon be released, and on what timeline?
Investigation underway
The department says its Internal Affairs Bureau came to the scene to investigate. A separate Force Investigation Team is reviewing what Metro calls the suspect’s “use of deadly force” for ramming the patrol cars.
It is unclear how long the Internal Affairs investigation is expected to take, and whether its findings will be made public.
