LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – It’s the time of year when we hear the rumble of school bus engines and smell the new pencils and notebooks as we send kids back to school.
CCSD’s buses took off early Monday morning at daybreak to pick up students around the valley, using an almost-full corps of drivers.
“We did a really good job this summer with our onboarding,” CCSD Interim Executive Director of Transportation Amber Rideout told FOX5 at the bus yard. “We were able to secure over 100 drivers for our vacancies. Our vacancy now is just a little over 20.”
Students arriving to school at Matt Kelly Elementary on the Historic Westside of Las Vegas were greeted with a red carpet walk.
“We are here to welcome these children to the first day of school and to set the tone for the rest of the school year,” CCSD Board Trustee Linda Cavazos said cheerfully during the event. “The positivity and the excitement for the first day of school at Matt Kelly and in this entire community – you can just feel it in the room.”
Interim Superintendent Brenda Larsen-Mitchell echoed that feeling.
“There’s a great positive energy happening as we’re welcoming back over 290,000 students to the Clark County School District’s first day of school,” she said.
Larsen-Mitchell says the new measures in place this school year, including students being required to put their phones in pouches during class, are ready to take effect this week thanks to school principals around the district.
“They’ve been working on their plans for implementation, explaining the ‘why,’” she explained. “We need to make sure that our classrooms are distraction-free so our students and our educators can focus on teaching and learning.”
FOX5 also asked about the search for a new superintendent. Trustees say the next step is getting community feedback. They say they’re on track to meet their November 1 deadline.
