LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – New surveillance video played during a Las Vegas Justice Court hearing shows Red Rock Resort visitors fleeing after a brutal stabbing.
Shayne Sussman, 25, appeared before Judge Diana Sullivan on Tuesday morning for a bail hearing. He is accused of stabbing and critically injuring two Red Rock Casino employees in the early hours of Saturday, Aug. 3.
“Unpredictable behavior is almost more concerning to the court for community safety than predictable behavior,” Judge Sullivan said. “There’s no indication of a self defense claim here. There’s really no explanation, no logical explanation for these acts other than maybe he was intoxicated.”
An arrest report obtained by FOX5 details the moments leading up to the attack, which investigators described as “unprovoked.”
Surveillance footage was shown in court from inside the casino, showing patrons fleeing from the area immediately after Sussman stabbed two people and was shot by police.
Those from the district attorney’s office describe for the judge how the defendant hides behind a pillar, and waits for the attacks which can be seen from multiple angles.
Sussman makes his way to the casino floor, where security is out in full force after being alerted of the attacks.
The defendant then sits on a bench near a restaurant. As they stepped closer, the district attorney describes how the defendant tries to attack, and security officials scream, “knife,” several times while chasing him through the casino floor.
Once Sussman is grabbed, he can be seen swinging the knife, and is immediately shot by another security guard.
Witness reports on scene describe the security officer being an inch away from being stabbed in the head at the time.
Sussman’s defense lawyer, Tom Ericsson reacts to the video shown in court, and asks the judge for leniency.
“He understands the severity of the situation he’s gotten himself into,” Ericsson said. “You see his financial situation. He doesn’t have a lot of money, he’s got about $8,000. We would ask for a bail of $25,000.”
Instead, Judge Sullivan set bail at $500,000.
Sussman remains in custody at Clark County Detention Center and is facing multiple attempted murder and battery charges.
He is due back in court on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
