LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The City of Henderson wants to hear from you as the Reimagine Boulder Highway Project is underway. They are asking for volunteers to take part in walkability surveys on major streets connecting to Boulder Highway.

The goal of these surveys: figure out how to make things safer and easier for pedestrians and bikers.

The City of Henderson and RTC aim to improve a mile in each direction of Boulder Highway on major cross streets.

“The design for the corridor itself where the bus lanes are going is set. Our study is looking for everything that connects to it,” Jeff Speck, a walkability expert and city planner from Boston explained.

Dozens of volunteers showed up at the intersection of Boulder Highway and Horizon Tuesday afternoon for the walkability survey lead by Speck.

“A cyclist really doesn’t have anywhere to go, the lane just ends and then they merge with traffic,” FOX5’s Kim Passoth pointed out a bike lane ending before coming to Boulder Highway.

“Yes. Putting a physical barrier between the vehicles and the bikes, the bikes and the sidewalk would be protected,” Speck responded.

As FOX5 took part in the walk, one rider on a mobility scooter used the street rather than the sidewalk.

“I won’t cross the street without making eye contact,” stated Richard Dover, one of the walkability study volunteers.

Dover says he’s had close calls on his scooter and despite his health issues and the nearly 100 degree heat, took the bus across town just to take part in person.

“Pointing out cracks like this, they are not bad right now but if they get bigger that is like a crater for me… what I tell them, I hope is for the betterment of everybody,” Dover shared.
