LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Stopping deadly car crashes at a busy intersection in the southwest valley.

Neighbors say there’s a simple fix. They’re begging county officials to install traffic lights near Robindale Road and Torrey Pines Drive.

This all comes after a recent deadly wreck where a driver flew past the stop signs, and collided with an SUV.

Resident, Jacob Elras worries it could happen again.

His biggest concern, the school located at the cross streets.

“We don’t want to see that anymore in our community, especially with the children being that this is the intersection at the school, and there’s already so much traffic,” Elras said.

He adds traffic gets worse at pickup and drop off, and he would know.

Elras has lived in the area for 18 years and went to nearby Canarelli Middle School.

“I think it’s gotten more and more dangerous in the time that I’ve lived here,” Elras said. “The area has grown so much I think that there’s more traffic than a simple four-way stop could handle.”

That’s why Elras signed a Change.org petition to get the county to take action and install traffic lights.

He thinks if they had been in place, then a deadly crash wouldn’t have happened on October 8th.

That’s when a Dodge Challenger sped through the stop sign and crashed into the side of an SUV as it was going through the intersection.

However, Elras is realistic about the traffic lights being thought of as the ultimate solution. “I do not think it will be a magic bullet, but i think it’s a start.”

The area also added crossing guards to the intersection during school pickup and drop off.

“They did eventually get crossing guards, but it didn’t really solve the problem,” Elras said.

Clark County knows about the problem area.

However, FOX5 has learned from county officials the intersection did not meet the criteria for installing a traffic signal when it was studied in 2023 based on the number of cars and pedestrians in the area, average speed, and type of crashes.

Elras says, the county got it wrong. “I think it’s almost undisputable that it’s a problem,” Elras said.

The county says because the area is growing, the Public Works Department plans to study the area again next spring to see if it meets the guidelines for installing traffic lights.
