LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – As high winds approach the valley, NV Energy announced that it would be de-energizing the Mt. Charleston area to prevent possible wildfires.

In a release on Sunday, NV Energy issued a Public Safety Outage Management Watch, or PSOM, for the Mt. Charleston area, including Angel Peak and Kyle Canyon.

According to NV Energy, PSOMs are a “preventative action” taken to prevent wildfires based on “extreme weather criteria.” This includes high winds, low humidity, or heat, which prompts officials to proactively de-energize power lines.

The watch is scheduled to last from 10 p.m. on Sunday until 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Approximately 466 customers will be impacted by the outage.

If weather conditions change, the number of those affected and the length of the outage could expand.

Additional information, including outage preparedness tips, PSOM criteria, and maps of the impacted zones can be found online at nvenergy.com/psom.
