HENDERSON, Nev. (FOX5) – The Henderson Police Department is investigating vandalism in the Inspirada area after Halloween.
Justin Phelps said an intruder entered his property and vandalized it with derogatory words and inappropriate symbols and graphics, including Nazi signs.
He said it happened overnight at 4 a.m. Phelps said that it was an adult man who vandalized his home and not trick-or-treaters.
“I was alerted by my neighbor at the door,” he said. “I looked at my (Harris-Walz) political sign and Halloween decorations that were vandalized.”
Phelps said he was shocked, as he feels safe in his neighborhood. An outdoor camera on his property recorded the incident.
“It was something I never expected,” he said. “This is a great neighborhood where our neighbors look out for each other.”
Although his home fell victim to vandalism, he said he doesn‘t feel any less safe. He’s believes that this was politically motivated.
“I‘m more angry that as a country, we‘ve allowed the political climate to enter a fun and safe neighborhood,” he said. “This shouldn’t have been an issue.”
He says the Henderson Police Department was responsive in the situation and helped him feel safe.
FOX5 followed up with police after speaking with Phelps. Preliminary information shows that the incident was politically motivated and not a hate or racially-targeted crime.
Phelps says that he added more cameras to his home and he is not taking down his political signs. He told us that his neighbors have not experienced a similar incident.
