LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A crochet project at the East Las Vegas Library is bringing together people of different generations and from different parts of Latin America to create a large display.
The program is called Proyecto Tejido. Community members have been meeting at the library several times a month since April, crocheting colorful 22-inch hexagons.

“So these were inspired by the women who started a crochet circle in Mexico City,” one organizer said.
So far, about 160 hexagons have been completed. The goal is 250.
Participants span generations and countries
Women from their teens to their 80s are taking part, including participants from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and other parts of Latin America.
“It really encourages people to kind of get the hang of socializing with maybe someone they’re not used to. So it kind of bridges that generational gap,” one participant said.
“Our intent is to bring color and vibrancy and culture to our neighborhood,” one organizer said.
Learning a new skill and honoring family tradition
Emily Paniagua grew up watching her mother and grandmother crochet but never learned the craft herself.
“It is a very common problem with Gen Z, and I’m Gen Z, so I can attest to this. But we’re just trying to find different ways to stop doom scrolling,” Paniagua said.
“My mom is from Nayarit and my dad is from Jalisco, both from Mexico. So this has been a very important program because I feel like I’m honoring something that has been passed on in my family,” Paniagua said.
Participants also share music and stories while they work.
“We’ll listen to Mariachi one week. The next week, we’ll listen to Andean music. And so we just share. We get to share. So they’re crocheting and sharing their lives,” one participant said.
Display planned for November festival
By November, hundreds of individual hexagons will be joined together and displayed at the East Las Vegas Library’s Día de los Muertos festival.
The group meets several times a month at the East Las Vegas Library.
Organizers say anyone who would like to join is welcome.
