EVANSTON, Ill. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Lady Rebels fought hard in a back-and-forth game before heading into overtime against Northwestern, but came up short and fell 79-76 on Wednesday morning at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Amarachi Kimpson led the Scarlet & Gray (7-4) with a career-high 28 points by shooting 9-for-14 from the field and 10-for-11 from the free throw line. Aaliyah Alexander continued her double-digit this week as she put up 16 points against the Wildcats (6-4). Meadow Roland also had a double-figure points day with 12 points, as she shot 5-for-7 from the field and was 2-for-2 from the three-point line. McKinna Brackens led the Lady Rebels under the hoop and brought down eight rebounds. Brackens also dished a career-high five assists and blocked a career-high three shots, which led the squad in both categories.
Northwestern had five players in double-figures including the team-lead 21 points from Melannie Daley. Grace Sullivan added 14 points while Caileigh Walsh had 13 points, respectively. Casey Harter and Taylor Williams each had 12 points apiece.
STAT OF THE GAME: The Lady Rebels and Wildcats exchanged the lead 18 times and were tied 17 times throughout the game.
FOURTH QUARTER PUSH TO OVERTIME: As the fourth quarter starter, Kimpson got the Lady Rebels within one as she was fouled on a layup and completed the three-point play with a free throw. However, the Wildcats then scored six straight points to bring their lead back up to seven, 60-53. The two squads went back and forth for the next three minutes before the Lady Rebels went on an eight-point scoring run to take a 67-65 lead. Northwestern went back on top and back-to-back baskets and made it 69-67. Alyssa Brown brought down an offensive rebound and scored a tip-in layup with 15 seconds left to play to tie the game 69-69. Northwestern held the ball for the final two seconds to head into extra time.
OTHER NOTES:
– This is the first overtime game for UNLV this season.
– The Lady Rebels painted the paint red and outscored the Wildcats 48-36.
– Northwestern out-rebounded UNLV 44-39; however, the Lady Rebels had two more offensive rebounds, the Wildcats 15-13.
– The Scarlet & Gray forced 15 Northwestern turnovers and scored 11 points off them.
