LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The father of a 19-year-old turned in his son after he admitted to a deadly shooting, an arrest report revealed.
FOX5 obtained documents for Joshua Martinez. He faces one count of open murder with a deadly weapon. Las Vegas police said the shooting happened near a Walgreens in the 6800 block of N. Durango on Feb. 17.
Police say they received a call for someone needing medical assistance. The caller said someone took 30 pills.
When officers arrived, they found a man with blood coming from his head. He died at UMC.
As police investigated, they found surveillance video of the victim with another man before he died around 3 a.m.
A couple hours later, police at the scene were approached by a man who believed his son, Martinez, was responsible for the shooting.
Martinez’s father told police they woke up around 3 a.m. by noises coming from his son’s room. When he and his wife asked what was going on, Martinez said, “Daddy, I think I killed someone.”
Martinez would give his parents a handgun. His parents said they would talk about it in the morning as he was drunk and not making sense.
Later that morning, the two watched news about the homicide and thought what his son said was true. He would go and tell officers.
Las Vegas Police said they took Martinez into custody at his home.
Police would interview the 19-year-old. He said he was having murderous thoughts and it felt more intense when he drank.
That morning of the shooting, he took his parent’s debit card and tried to withdraw money out of it. While attempting to take money, he thought there was a group of hooded men watching him.
He would walk home but decide to walk back to the bank armed to find the group again.
While walking back, he found a man wrapped up in a blanket. Martinez told police he offered to help the man get to a hospital. The two would star walking together.
Martinez told the victim he wanted to murder someone. He said the victim felt the same.
During their conversation, Martinez said the victim revealed he lit someone on fire before. Martinez said something “clicked” and he needed to kill him.
According to the arrest report, Martinez made the victim believe he was heading inside a business to get more drinks. Instead, he turned to the victim with his back turned and shot him in the head.
Martinez is due in Las Vegas Justice Court for a preliminary hearing on April 8.
