LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Clark County School District Trustees voted to pause construction on new school buildings due to rising construction costs.
During the board meeting, trustees discussed the ongoing “Facility Master Plan” and how to address project bids increasing by over 60% and material costs increasing by 40%. Leaders say they factored in repair costs, the age of buildings, and enrollment into the conversation.
On Thursday, trustees voted unanimously to pause construction on new school projects to reevaluate their current funding.
Superintendent Jhone Ebert highlighted how the board would need to take the time to “really deep dive into what the community needs.”
Brandon McLaughlin, an assistant superintendent for the construction and development plan, said, “In early 2026, when the facility master plan has concluded, if the board were to pause the current listing of projects, the board would then have approximately $3.5 billion available to implement the recommendations of that plan.”
Trustees also highlighted a need for clarity on how the current budget can address concerns over security upgrades and possible AC issues during the summer.
McLaughlin shared that a future board item will be brought forward to proactively evaluate older HVAC equipment across campuses and determine which could be replaced soon.
