LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – It’s been over one month since a group of Clark County School District middle school girls unknowingly undressed in front of a camera on a school campus, and a new report obtained from an involved mother is revealing new details about what happened.
FOX5 requested our own copy of the report, but the request was pushed back.
We are not identifying this mother to protect this family’s privacy.
According to the report she provided to FOX5, on April 7, CCSD Police Officers were called to Jerome Mack Middle School in reference to “two female students who reported discovering a camera inside a closet where they were changing.”
“It angers me, it angers me and it makes me feel inadequate at protecting her,” this mother said.
According to the report she provided, a staff member directed a group of girls into a long-term substitute’s closet to change because they were unable to change in the locker room.
Then, “one of the students came back to her panicked,” after they remembered the closet they just changed in had a camera inside it.
Police enter the closet and locate a “black camera that was placed on top of a cardboard box.”
According to the report this mother provided, this long-term-sub told school administration that “students did not respect the space,” so “he installed the camera and told the students he was monitoring them.”
In a statement, a CCSD Spokesperson said the camera was there to prevent theft because it was in a closet used for storing valuable items.
“Who’s allowing this? Who orchestrated this? Who’s allowing this to happen?” the involved mother said.
According to the report, this long term sub said he had “spoke briefly” about the camera with school administration back in January, but wasn’t given a clear answer on whether or not he could use it.
School administration, however, said they did not authorize the long-term sub to use the camera and were “unaware” it was there, according to the report she provided.
“Somebody has to be held at fault. Somebody,” the mother said.
FOX5 first reported the incident in April. Afterwards, a source came forward, saying they have seen about four cameras placed by staff in different areas throughout the school.
They even sent pictures of two of those cameras. One photo showed a camera mounted in what appeared to be a classroom.
“I want to know what the protocol is on this. This is ridiculous,” the mother says.
FOX5 asked CCSD what their policy is for personal cameras on campus four times over the span of about two weeks.
On Tuesday, a CCSD Spokesperson said there is no single policy that addresses all uses of personal recording devices, but pointed to this regulation.
Regulation 3613.2 breaks down district rules for the media, and for outside organizations not affiliated with CCSD. It does not specify how employees can use personal recording devices on campus.
This mother said she is fearful, without clear guidance, this could happen to another family.
“I intend to follow it through, and we’ll see what happens,” she says.
As for the incident at Jerome Mack Middle School, according to the report this mother provided, a CCSD Police Officer looked through all 283 videos stored on this long-term-sub’s drive. The report includes no mention of any recordings of the girls undressing.
A CCSD Spokesperson confirmed the long-term-sub has been removed from the sub pool and no longer eligible for assignments on CCSD campuses.
“The case is still open, however at this time there is no indication of criminal intent. As our initial statement indicated, the camera was in a closet used for storing valuable items. The camera was placed there to prevent theft,” a CCSD Spokesperson said in a statement.
