LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – New developments Wednesday night when it comes to wrong-way drivers.

In December 2023, a wrong-way driver killed three-year-old Jaya Brooks in a crash on the 95. Her family has been pushing for change since.

They testified at the legislature. AB 111 would give wrong-way driving harsher penalties.

“Everyday I look forward to spending the day with my daughter,” said Jan Brooks, Jaya’s father. “On December 9, 2023, that was taken from me.”

She was killed in the wrong-way crash. Jan was also in the car too.

Jaya’s family traveled to Carson City speaking to the Senate Committee on Growth and Infrastructure, urging lawmakers to pass Assembly Bill 111, or “Jaya’s Law.”

“We do everything to keep her memory alive and bring awareness to implore other people to pay attention on our roads.”

Jaya’s mother, Darea, wants to make sure no parent has to go through the trauma she has.

“She was supposed to outlive me, and I had to bury her,” she said.

The senate committee voted unanimously to advance the bill after the family’s testimony. The chair of the committee, Rochelle Nguyen, thanked the family before the vote.

“Thank you and thank you all for coming up here and sharing just a little piece of who she was with us. I’m flag you guys are able to take your pain and grief to make sure that other people are safer in our community.”

The bill will be heard on the senate floor Thursday. FOX5 was told there won’t be a vote. The bill’s sponsor, Brian Hibbetts, says he expects it will be voted on before the session ends.
