LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – It’s been an emotional month for arbor view students and their families.
Arbor View senior Mackenzie Scott’s death outside the school highlighted a major problem. The fact that there are no traffic signals for students to safely cross the street.
Krista Holloway is an Arbor View mom, who started “walk safely LV” and has recruited parents to come out in the mornings and at dismissal to serve as volunteer crossing guards.
Since she started recruiting parents. It’s been a mostly smooth and positive process.
“The appreciation we’re getting from the parents and students, they’re really appreciative of it. ” said Holloway.
But there’s some drivers that don’t follow the rules of the road.
“Not crossing the crosswalk when people are in it, u-turns, and speeding.” she explained.
Even one who confronted a volunteer.
“We turned to come back and the lady was trying to turn right on to buffalo and we were still in the street. And she yelled at us and said. Get out of the road and you’re supposed to tell me when i’m supposed to go. And then she later on spoke to the same person that was with me and other mom at albertsons and yelled at her there.” she shared.
But as the school year winds down Families are hopeful for change before classes return in august.
Just be vigilant. Lookout for children, drive with caution and know the laws of the road and where crosswalks are. Even if you can’t see them because they need to be painted.
The area around Arbor View High School is under the city of Las Vegas’s jurisdiction.
The city says it put up yellow dividers on the street next to the school last summer after reports of u-turns and other dangerous driving during drop-off and dismissal.
And they plan to look at different factors including traffic volume and speeds.
The city also clarified with the school year ending it will take into account the different traffic patterns when school is and is not in session.
The Clark County school district’s last day of school is this Friday.
