LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Department of Homeland Security announced that it will be cracking down on sanctuary cities that are “defying federal immigration law.”
The City of Las Vegas has been identified in a list of sanctuary cities shared Thursday, though City Mayor Shelley Berkley and Metro Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill have previously stated it is not.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stated in a release, “These sanctuary city politicians are endangering Americans and our law enforcement in order to protect violent criminal illegal aliens. We are exposing these sanctuary politicians who harbor criminal illegal aliens and defy federal law. President Trump and I will always put the safety of the American people first. Sanctuary politicians are on notice: comply with federal law.”
FOX5 has reached out to the city for a response, but in March, Mayor Berkley clarified the city’s position during a bi-weekly press conference.
DHS says the jurisdictions listed will get formal notifications about non-compliance and demand that policies be reviewed and revised.
The list stems from an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in late April. The order directed the Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and Attorney General Pam Bondi to publicly identify jurisdictions reportedly not cooperating with federal immigration authorities.
