Our FOX5 newsroom has been flooded with emails and calls from concerned neighbors who say the scammers don’t stay within state lines.
“One of my family members that received two of these texts lives in Oklahoma!” This viewer, like several other did not wish to go on camera for an interview, but wanted to sound the alarm.
At first glance the scam text message looks like it’s coming from Las Vegas Courts, and even has a .gov web address.
Some concerned FOX5 viewers say they almost fell for it.
“It makes me mad because of the fact that #1, you know, you know this is a scam. And #2, someone who might think they have a ticket might click on it and get, you know, all their info taken!”
So, what did this lady do after getting the text that she had to pay up within the next 12 hours to avoid further fines or legal action?
“I just took a screenshot of it and did a report and delete.”
Clark County leaders released this statement, it reads: “The county is recently aware of a text alert stating that the recipient has an unpaid ticket. This is a scam. The county, which includes the Las Vegas Justice Court, does not solicit payments from the public through text messages. please do not click on the link to pay.”
The potential for making easy money is what set off a lot of viewers.
“What, do they think people are stupid? But they’re hoping people are stupid. It makes me mad because you know, these people are trying to get something for nothing.”
The City of Las Vegas is aware of the issue, and has a few ways to spot a legitimate ticket, writing in a statement:
“Parking Services will never reach out via text regarding an outstanding account.
– A citation number, date and the officer’s name will be present.
– We don’t accept parking ticket payments from Cash App.“
If you’re ever worried about a ticket being legit or not, you’re encouraged to contact the city’s parking team at the email address here.
