LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A fire damaged the Nevada Youth Sports complex in southwest Las Vegas on the Fourth of July, forcing the facility to close and leaving it without power, according to staff.

The facility says that the County Fire Department has preliminarily determined that illegal fireworks caused the fire, staff said. An investigation remains ongoing.

Damage and closure

The complex, which opened one year ago, hosts volleyball, pickleball, basketball, flag football, and other sports. Staff said the custom flooring alone carries a price tag of approximately $350,000.

Estimated damages currently stand at around $250,000, though that figure could change as inspections continue, the complex said.

No one was inside the facility when the fire broke out. The facility says a bystander reported seeing fire on the roof and contacted first responders.

Community impact

Chief Administrative Officer Jane Ramos said the closure of the southwest facility affects a significant portion of the families the organization serves.

“About 8,000 of the 14,000 families that I mentioned that we service every year, that 8,000 is in this area, in this district,” Ramos said.

Response from first responders and community

Staff said the Clark County Fire Department returned to the facility after the fire to check on staff.

“Clark County Fire Department came by just to see how we were doing,” Ramos said. “And again, it’s such a community effort; community feels to all of this.” The organization is very thankful for all of the kind messages and support they have received, and will be working on repairing the facility. Sports have been cancelled for now, and there is a lack of power in the facility.”
