LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – FOX5 is looking into an unusual distraction for drivers on the I-11 on a stretch of the freeway in east Las Vegas.

The overhead lights reported flashed in random patterns like a strobe light for weeks.

“They are flashing constantly and they are a safety hazard,” explained Frank Martinez who drives the stretch of I-11 daily.

Video from one of a traffic camera at Flamingo and the I-11 from Thursday night shows multiple lights going in and out at random.

“I think that is something that needs to be taken care of as soon as possible… just accident waiting to happen,” Martinez asserted.

FOX5 reached out to NDOT about the issue late Friday. As of Monday night, they appear to have been fixed. NDOT tells FOX5 crews spent Monday assessing the issue and are still trying to determine what’s wrong with the lights and what caused them to flash.

NDOT told FOX5 any lights that continue to have problems may be off until the issue is resolved.

Back in December, another stretch of lights on the I-11 were knocked out by the copper wire theft. Lights were off in both the north and south bound lanes from Las Vegas Boulevard to Eastern.

NDOT estimated the repairs costed around $40,000. Back in 2020, FOX5 also reported highway lights on the I-11 being knocked out by another case of copper thieves.
