LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Broadacres Marketplace in North Las Vegas temporarily closed its gates Saturday, citing fear in the immigrant community due to immigration enforcement.

The parking lot that’s usually packed with families, music and food vendors sat empty.

In a post on social media, Broadacres announced they’ve temporarily closed out of an abundance of caution as fear spreads through immigrant communities in Southern Nevada.

The announcement left hundreds of vendors without work. The city of North Las Vegas cites Broadacres as one of the area’s largest private employers, with up to 5,000 people connected to its operations.

“This isn’t just a disruption, right, it’s an economic emergency for the hundreds of immigrant entrepreneurs that operate as part of Broadacres,” said State Senator Fabian Doñate.

Doñate explained many of the businesses inside Broadacres are Latino-owned and that this closure is hitting immigrant entrepreneurs at their busiest time of the year.

“Which threatens their ability to pay their rent, to support their families and to invest in the local economy,” Doñate said.

Outside the gates, Xavier Saldaña showed up to find tamales only to find an empty lot.

“I feel sad for everybody,” Saldaña said. “For the people, our people, these people work hard for this city, for this country.”

Saldaña said the fear that’s kept people away from Broadacres is rippling through the entire community and he’s not the only one who feels this way.

“We’re very aware of the situation,” said another local customer, Rubi Peña. “And so that’s specifically what why we were coming, you know, to support our Hispanic community, and it’s unfortunate to see it like this.”

As of Saturday evening, there is no reopening date yet. Management announced the closure is temporary and they will announce an anticipated reopening date online.
