LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford announced Tuesday that his office, in conjunction with a coalition of private attorneys, has filed lawsuits against five major social media platforms.
The civil suits against TikTok, Snapchat, and three Meta-owned platforms; Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, allege the algorithms used deliberately “addict young minds and prey on teenagers’ well-understood vulnerabilities.” It claims that’s led to problematic internet usage and caused young Nevadans mental and physical harm.
“My commitment to protecting consumers, particularly those that are as vulnerable as our youth, is unwavering,” said Ford in his announcement. “Bringing this litigation is an important step toward ensuring social media platforms put our children’s safety before their profits. I look forward to working closely with our partners to protect the youth of our state.”
Ford’s concerns extend beyond teenagers, to those under 13. The AG says each of the platforms poses serious risks to juveniles of all ages.
