ELY, Nev. (KOLO) – The Bureau of Land Management says it is moving forward with plans for a wild horse gather in east Nevada.

BLM says they will begin what they say is an emergency gather in an area around 50 miles west of Ely. The agency says they plan to gather and remove around 100 horses.

Horses will be gathered using temporary bait and water traps and the BLM says they will not be using helicopters.

The area the horses will be gathered from is known as the Pancake Complex, which encompasses 824,000 acres. As of March 1, the population of horses and burros in the area is 1,092, while the appropriate management level is between 240 and 493 horses.

Once the operation is complete, around 992 horses will remain in the area. The area’s most recent gather was completed in 2022.

The BLM says the area, as well as the horses living within it, have been affected by drought. Monitoring of the area conducted in the spring and summer has found limited water and forage opportunities thanks to a local drought.

Wild horses removed from the area will be taken to the Indian Lakes Off Range Corrals in Fallon, where they will be checked by a vet and readied for adoption.
