LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Steady foot traffic at Broadacres Marketplace was a welcome sight.
People like Aaron Lopez are excited to see so many people return for the anticipated reopening.
“As you can see, everyone is coming out, getting back. Everybody is together and it’s just an amazing feeling,” Lopez said.
An amazing feeling for patrons and vendors alike.
Daniel McCabe, who has helped run his father’s spot for the last decade, noticed how eager people were to take in the goods the hundreds of vendors offer at the marketplace.
“Well, my dad’s been here about 25 years. I’ve been helping out for the last 10,” McCabe said.
“The past two days, just opened up, and they’re buying pants 10 at a time.”
It’s been the warmest welcome for Broadacres’ return, especially from people like Picente Castro, who was shocked when the market shut down in June.
“When I came back two months ago, they told me that it was closed. I was like ‘wow that’s my hangout place,’” Castro said.
FOX 5 has closely followed the Broadacres situation after the marketplace voluntarily closed its doors on June 21 out of an abundance of caution.
Concerns about ICE and national immigration enforcement led to the closure.
People at the market today hope fear won’t take away an important community staple again.
“There are over 1,200 vendors. Usually that means 3,500-4,000 people here on the weekends,” McCabe said.
“It’s Sunday, 12 o’clock. This time last year, this place would be packed. I think there might be a little bit of scare for ICE, but since I’ve been here, I haven’t seen any agents.”
“I’m glad that it’s open now and hope everything goes back to normal and everybody isn’t scared anymore,” Lopez said.
“At the end of the day, we’re all the same people. We’re here for a reason. We’re here to make money, we’re here to enjoy life. We can’t be separated at this point in time.”
