LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The father of Jonathan Lewis Jr., a student who died after a violent assault, is suing the Clark County School District over the teen’s death.

According to the lawsuit, Jonathan Lewis, the father of Lewis Jr., 17, accuses the Clark County School District of negligence, saying the district failed to respond to known threats and risks and failed to properly train teachers and staff to prevent bullying and violence and to follow school discipline laws.

The attack, which occurred in November 2023 at Searles Avenue and 21st Street, near Rancho High School, left Lewis Jr. severely injured. The lawsuit alleges the site of the assault was “a gathering spot for students” where fighting and criminal activity had previously occurred. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and placed on life support.

He died six days after the incident.

In the lawsuit, Lewis Jr.’s father said district officials were aware of Lewis’ status as a special needs student and had previously received complaints about his assailants, many of whom attended Rancho High School along with Lewis Jr.

Nine individuals were taken into custody in connection with the assault. Damien Hernandez, 17; Dontral Beaver, 16; Gianni Robinson, 17; and Treavion Randolph, 16, agreed to voluntary manslaughter charges related to Lewis Jr.’s death. The agreement moved those cases to juvenile court, attorney Robert Draskovich said in August 2024. Five other teens were tried in juvenile court.

The lawsuit seeks general and special damages in excess of $15,000, covering grief, emotional distress and financial losses resulting from Lewis Jr.’s death, as well as attorneys’ fees, prejudgment interest, court costs and any other relief the court finds appropriate. A jury trial was requested, according to the suit.
