LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — FOX5 is looking into the claims of overcrowding at some CCSD high schools and getting answers from the district.
According to CCSD officials, at Green Valley High School, portable classrooms have been brought in to make room.
“Most of her classes yesterday were anywhere from 40 to 50 kids in each class,” explained one dad who asked we not share his identity for fear of backlash against his daughter still wanting to share her story.
“She’s a sophomore. She was in a portable yesterday… 90° was the temperature, and there was about 50 kids in the classroom. They don’t have enough chairs, not enough desks in the classrooms,” the dad reported.
“I was nearly late on the first day of school, considering there was so many cars in the way… it’s been really difficult with this many students,” Teilan Lee, a Desert Oasis High School student shared with FOX5. Overcrowding at Desert Oasis High School is also a concern for one mom who shared pictures and screenshots of gridlock traffic.
“I have a safety concern… Is there a place to sit down and have their lunch? Can they make it through the lunch lines in time? If something happens at the school, is there enough exits and places to get out?,” she questioned.
FOX5 took the concerns to the district who shared this response:
Green Valley HS:
Desert Oasis HS:
Without the portable classrooms, capacity at Desert Oasis is 2,559 according to the district’s website. That’s upsetting to the mom who spoke to us.
“I think they need to quit being reactive and be proactive and they need to do better,” she contended.
The District added:
Clark County School District is in the process of developing a new Facility Master Plan.
Speaking with FOX5 last week, new CCSD Superintendent Jhone Ebert shared the district had 6,000 more children enrolled this year than at the same time last year.
