F1 sues Las Vegas gift shops over alleged counterfeit merchandise

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Formula 1 officials have filed a lawsuit accusing two Las Vegas gift shops of selling counterfeit merchandise.

The lawsuit alleges that the gift shop sold counterfeit merchandise containing the company’s trademarks, including F1, Formula 1 and Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Investigators found the unauthorized merchandise during the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix at Crazy Ely and Bonanza Gift Shop, adding that 69 counterfeit items were seized from Crazy Ely on Nov. 17, 2023, the lawsuit claims.

Additionally, the lawsuit cites records showing that the two shops purchased thousands of counterfeit items in 2023.

F1 officials claim the defendants used confusingly similar imitations of Formula 1 branding to create “confusion, deception and mistake among the general purchasing public.”

The company requests a declaration of infringement and unfair competition, an injunction banning the use of Formula 1 marks, the destruction or surrender of counterfeit merchandise, damages up to $1 million, and pre- and post-judgment interest.
