LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Unsurprisingly, Lake Mead was filled with people enjoying Labor Day on the water.
Both local and from out of town, like Mike Tretinjak who lives in California now but has come to the lake all his life.
“30 years we’ve been coming out here. It’s been fantastic for our family. Water has been going down but the lake is still amazing,” Tretinjak said.
Lake Mead’s water levels have been looked at closely in recent years.
From historic low levels in 2022 to lake leaders calling on the community for help to remove abandoned boats once hidden below the lake’s surface.
FOX5 found several boats Monday near Lake Mead that had been removed from the water.
“Sad someone lost their boat but I’m sure there’s probably 100 other boats in there still waiting to be found,” Tretinjak said.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation put out a report in July predicting the lakes historic low water levels could return by summer of 2027.
However, boaters like Davin Brown didn’t seem concerned about the water in present day.
“It’s been fairly consistent for the past couple months I want to say,” Brown said.
“You just kind of get used to where it’s at now. It’s definitely lower than it was last year but you just get used to it.”
The bigger concern boaters shared with FOX5 centered around the launch ramp to get into the water.
“It’s shallow so you have to get the truck pretty far in. I’ve got a bigger truck but if you don’t have a bigger truck, it’s a little challenging. We saw a couple trucks that were up to their wheel wells,” Tretinjak said.
Back in June, construction began on expanding the ramp at Hemenway Harbor to go down to 1,000 feet, in anticipation of lower water levels returning.
“Clearly they’re doing a lot of work down there. It’s definitely slowing things down,” Theresa Brown said. “The more people that know what they’re doing and are ready to go the better.”
