LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The high-tech traffic system designed to curb traffic congestion and reduce collisions is coming to another major Southern Nevada freeway.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is expanding its “Safe Tech Corridor” system to I-11, bringing variable speed limits and wrong-way driver detection technology to the busy stretch between the Spaghetti Bowl and the Summerlin Parkway interchange.

Overhead electronic freeway gantries—known as active traffic management signs—have been a fixture of the I-15 resort corridor since NDOT installed 42 of them in 2019.

The digital signs feature lane-control symbols, such as green arrows and red “X” markings, alongside dynamic, variable speed limit signs.

According to regional officials, expanding the technology is a direct response to positive safety trends observed on I-15 over the last several years.

“What we’ve seen is an improvement of the flow of traffic and the reduction of speeds because those variable speed limits are continually changing based on what the actual traffic is doing out on the freeway,” said Theresa Gaisser, Deputy CEO of the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC).

The real-time computer software automatically adjusts speeds to match actual traffic flow, which NDOT reports has successfully reduced secondary traffic crashes since becoming operational in 2020.
