LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit after a man died doing construction for the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Tizoc Antonio died at 37 years old on Sept. 23, 2023. His mother is also listed in the lawsuit as his only living parent. The defendants include Evolution Power Tools LLC, Standard Steel Limited, Bellagio, MGM Resorts International and more companies allegedly involved.

The lawsuit says grandstands were being built on the Fountains of Bellagio for the race starting Nov. 18 that year. On Feb. 2, 2023, the lawsuit says Bellagio and a company called Carma signed a contract to start construction of the grandstands.

The parties signed saying, “time is of the essence,” according to the lawsuit. Standard Steel was reportedly assigned to provide all material, labor and equipment to assemble the grandstands.

The lawsuit says Standard Steel started work around Sept. 15, 2023, with a planned completion date in October.

On Sept. 23, the lawsuit says Tizoc went to work on the Bellagio grandstands around 4 a.m. It was reportedly his first day on the job. Before starting, he was given on site training performed by Sean Teglia, listed as a defendant.

The lawsuit says one of the saws used to cut through aluminum was not made with a kickback safety stop. A defendant listed as “World Wide” was allegedly responsible for the safety at the jobsite and the lawsuit accuses them of knowing the saw was not equipped with an antikickback stop.

The lawsuit claims if those measures were in place, the saw would not have killed Tizoc. It accuses the defendants of placing “profits over safety.” The defendants are accused of failing to warn him of the equipment’s risks. It also says that hazards were observed such as the equipment failing to turn off when the trigger was released and failing to have safety features.

The family is asking for damages of more than $15,000 and for a jury trial.

FOX5 reached out to some of the companies named in the lawsuit today and have not yet heard back.
