NORTH LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A North Las Vegas business was recognized for its impact in the community.

On Lake Mead in downtown North Las Vegas, shelves of Mexican candy, spices and memories fill la Galanta Tapatia. Now, they wear a new badge of honor: City of North Las Vegas business of the month, a recognition that spotlights neighborhood standouts.

“The business of the month is it’s a little recognition that we started a few years ago,” said North Las Vegas Councilman Isaac Barron.

Barron said the program uplifts homegrown businesses breathing new life into the City of North Las Vegas. He added it was an easy pick this month.

“And so it was actually very natural that I picked them as business of the month, especially because we’re going into Hispanic heritage month and they are kind of like a Hispanic-themed business,” Barron said.

Raul and Roselva Contreras started their business off small. From selling products from home to a successful business they said to be honored in this way is a dream come true.

“When he called me, I couldn’t believe it, I was like, ‘what did I do?’ He goes, ‘wow, you guys work hard, you guys have two stores in North Las Vegas, you guys are doing good,” Raul said.

As an immigrant from Mexico, Raul said starting a business wasn’t always smooth sailing at first.

“It’s not easy, but it’s doable. Anybody can do it. So, the first store was a little difficult because we had no idea, we opened up, the city came, and they told us, ‘where’s the license?’ What license? We didn’t know,” Raul said.

Their message to other Hispanic entrepreneurs dreaming of a storefront is to have no hesitation.

“Don’t be scared…you just go for it, don’t be afraid.”

The owners said they have plans to keep expanding and opening more locations across the Valley in the near future, and this honor inspires them to keep moving forward with that dream.
