LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Families at a southwest valley apartment complex received free school supplies and health services Friday without leaving their neighborhood.
Nonprofit developer Nevada Hand hosted a back-to-school wellness event at the Southern Pines Family Apartments, near Decatur and Silverado Ranch.

What the event offered
Residents received free backpacks, school supplies, vision checkups and prescription glasses. Families checked in at the clubhouse, then rotated through stations for dental and vision screenings, vaccines and community resources before picking up supplies.
Nevada Hand described the event as a one-stop shop for low-income families, designed to save parents time, money and a trip across town.
Community response
Oviona Johnson, resident coordinator at Southern Pines, said the event brought neighbors together, including some who had just moved in.
“A lot of people here have different circumstances… so it’s pretty cool to see everybody not only get this resource but also come together as a community,” Johnson said. “This is a lot of their first time meeting… some of them just moved in. So I think it’s just a great opportunity all around.”
Plans to expand
Friday’s event was the last in a two-week series of back-to-school wellness fairs held at Nevada Hand family properties across the Las Vegas Valley. The organization said it plans to bring the event back and expand it next year.
