LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A social media trend has Las Vegas Valley officers warning the community of the dangers you can face for participating.
“It’s important for officers to try to be ahead of the game,” shared Officer Roberto Vaquera with the North Las Vegas Police Department sitting down FOX5 to discuss the dangers of a door kicking challenge that’s been popularized on social media.
It is happening throughout Southern Nevada and the country. A Texas boy was killed by a homeowner last week as kids are upping the old “ding-dong-ditch” prank to kicking and pounding on front doors and garage doors.
“A lot of folks are going to protect their home… the results can be very drastic,” Officer Vaquera contended.
FOX5 obtained video of kids kicking a garage door last week in the Cadence neighborhood in Henderson.
In July, FOX5 spoke with homeowners in North Las Vegas. They told us teens kicked in their front door and broke the frame causing $5,000 in damage.
Officer Vaquera shared North Las Vegas Police is aware of the national trend and want to get ahead of it but they say it is hard to track it locally because they don’t know what calls are connected to the challenge and which ones aren’t. They ask if your door is kicked, immediately call police.
“Our children are being exposed to dangers that they are probably not aware of… perhaps in their mindset when you look at it as just as a harmless prank, but these harmless pranks, unfortunately, you turn out you have some very negative consequences,” Officer Vaquera explained.
North Las Vegas police say the more calls they get, the better they can respond to neighborhoods where it’s happening. They want to intervene before a child finds themselves in a dangerous situation.
