LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas Wolverines took the football field Saturday without their number 3 for the first time, as teammates and family honored 10-year-old Marquis Abraham, who died in a e-scooter crash Thursday.
His mother, Portia Wales, attended Saturday’s game as others wrapped their arms around her in support.
“My baby was a good boy, everybody loved him, he was a mama’s boy,” Wales said.
Team remembers fallen teammate
Some wore shirts with Marquis’ picture and his name displayed on helmets with stickers placed there by the woman now carrying his legacy.
“He was a great person, good student, he loved to learn, he was the person that wanted to learn new things if he didn’t get it right,” Wales said.
Before kickoff, the Wolverines released balloons in Abraham’s honor. Players had tears in their eyes as they prepared to play without their teammate.
“He was always really helpful in the games, he was always optimistic, he always wanted to help, he always had something nice to say to everyone,” said teammate Edgar Roscoe Cordova.
Mother seeks justice
Wales said she will continue fighting for justice for her son.
“My baby need justice, his justice is my justice, I’m going to fight for him,” Wales said.
She remembered how Abraham would call out to her just to say hello.
“Marquis put a smile on everybody face, everybody, I miss him saying ‘ma’ and didn’t want nothing, he didn’t want nothing, he just want to say ma,” Wales said.
Wolverines Coach Kenny Ford said Abraham’s presence was still felt at Saturday’s game.
“He’s still here, I checked him in today as being here, but he’s here in spirit, yeah, he’s here in spirit,” Ford said.
