LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Nevada Senate Democrats Tuesday said a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) alternative could be discussed in a potential special session of the Nevada Legislature.
According to the release, if a special session of the Nevada Legislature is called, Nevada Democrats plan to introduce legislation that would fund a state alternative to SNAP, dubbed the “Nevada Emergency Nutrition Assistance Program.”
The move comes amid an ongoing federal government shutdown that has resulted in SNAP benefits being shuttered for many Nevadans.
On Oct. 6, Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo called for a special session, saying that the goal would be to “finish what the Legislature left unfinished — plain and simple.”
The release comes as a Tuesday Senate vote failed, rejecting a temporary government funding bill. The federal closure remains on track to become the longest in history.
