LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Camera systems mounted on trailers with flashing blue lights and solar panels have become a common sight along Las Vegas Valley streets, but many aren’t operated by law enforcement.

,, not to be confused with similar systems deployed by Metro Police and Henderson Police.

The private camera systems look similar to law enforcement units, featuring overhead cameras and solar panels. One key difference is branding — LiveView Technologies units display “LVT” instead of police department logos.

The cameras use artificial intelligence to detect suspicious behavior before it happens.

“Really, it’s about taking what the camera sees and providing context to the events that are happening,” said Matt Kelley, Senior Vice President of Business and Market Development at Live View Technologies.

Kelley said deterring bad behavior is equally important as detection. The units feature flashing blue lights designed to draw attention to the cameras and create an impression of surveillance.

“That really is giving that impression of control, drawing their eyes up to the camera to let them know they’re being watched,” Kelley said.

The units can also broadcast formal announcements stating “this property is under surveillance, trespassing is prohibited,” and sometimes play classical music on a loop.

“To the normal person walking through the parking lot, that’s fine. But if you’re standing in a parking lot for five hours at a time, it’s going to tend to get annoying,” Kelley said about the repeating soundtrack.

He described the cameras as an extension of a property’s existing security team. Video footage is kept internally unless the security team chooses to share it with law enforcement.

In Henderson, police officials said residents can request the camera’s presence by calling the Henderson Police Department or through Contact Henderson.

Metro Police said residents can’t specifically request a camera, but can put in service requests to have a Crime Prevention Specialist come out to determine if a camera is necessary.
