LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Olympic figure skater Surya Bonaly said thieves broke into her home over four consecutive days and stole her collection of medals representing decades of competitive achievements.
Surveillance cameras at Bonaly’s home near Durango and Oakey captured what she described as an organized burglary spanning Friday through Monday. Video footage obtained by FOX5 shows different people arriving each day, with windows shattered, cameras ripped down, and WiFi cut during the break-in.
Bonaly was in Minnesota helping her mother, who has been diagnosed with three types of cancer — lung, breast, and sternum. Bonaly is also battling breast cancer while undergoing treatment and continuing to work as a trainer.
Thieves used disguises
On the first day, camera footage shows one person in a black hoodie with a woman wearing what appeared to be a delivery vest. Bonaly later found a similar vest abandoned one street away from her house.
“I think it’s definitely organized by a company or by some bad people,” Bonaly said.
The intruders broke windows, pulled down cameras, and cut the WiFi, disabling her security app. Three days later, she returned to find her front door open and the house ransacked.
“I realized that my medals were gone,” Bonaly said. “European champion or world champion, junior, everything — any medals that I had with my skating.”
Medals represent lifetime achievements
The stolen medals include recognition from European championships, world competitions, and junior titles. Bonaly, a five-time European champion and nine-time French national champion, said each medal marks significant moments from arenas around the world.
“I was there when the president of my French country gave me that as a present. So it’s a big honor,” she said.
Despite the emotional toll, Bonaly said she feels angry about the theft.
“Well, just — I feel mad. I feel like sometimes I feel like I want to cry,” she said. “Some people just feel like it’s better to steal something from someone than to go to work.”
Skater plans to stay despite break-in
Bonaly said she loves her neighborhood and plans to stay despite the burglary, though she will increase security measures by adding more cameras.
“I’m hoping that I can find maybe some medals. I’m hoping, and I pray really that no [one’s] gonna melt that medal,” she said.
Bonaly filed a police report with Metro’s Summerlin Area Command. The investigation remains ongoing.
