LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is issuing a crucial warning to the public about a deceptive website designed to steal personal data.

A DMV spokesperson says the agency has received multiple reports regarding a fraudulent website that mimics the official DMV site.

According to officials, this fake website features a chatbot that attempts to lure individuals into booking appointments. During these interactions, the chatbot illicitly requests sensitive personal information, including identification details and Social Security numbers. Furthermore, users are asked to pay an appointment fee, a practice the Nevada DMV explicitly states it will never engage in.

“We will never charge any customer a booking fee, as our appointments have been and always will be free,” said DMV Director Tonya Laney. “Luckily in this case, the customer did not provide any payment details, but they did provide personal identifying information. Always be sure to check the URL when visiting our website. A scammer cannot legitimately register a .gov domain unless they are an actual U.S. government agency.”

The DMV has emphasized the importance of vigilance and urges everyone to always verify the website’s URL. A key indicator of a legitimate government website is the “.gov” domain.

Officials report scammers are unable to register a “.gov” domain, making it a reliable way to distinguish official sites from fraudulent ones. Always ensure you are on a trusted “.gov” domain before providing any personal information or making payments.

Officials ask those who come across these scams to report them to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
