LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Henderson teenager organized two animal rescue events over the weekend, including a cleanup at a location known for animal dumping east of the Las Vegas Valley.

Miia Leon, a 19-year-old UNLV student and current Miss Nevada Earth USA, coordinated the events for Paws Patrol LV. On Saturday, the group held a low-cost microchipping event at Lee’s Family Forum at the Craggy Range Sports Bar.

The following day, volunteers conducted a cleanup in a desolate area on the road to Lake Mead that has gained an infamous reputation as an animal dumping ground.

Volunteers find deceased animals during cleanup

“We had an organized cleanup of the Wash and of course again, like the last few times that we’ve been out there, we ended up finding more remains,” said Joyce Freeman of Paws Patrol LV.

Leon said volunteers discovered two deceased pugs that were not microchipped. The dogs were found inside a garbage bag that had been tied up and dumped on the side of the road.

“How cruel could somebody be to do something like that to innocent life that can’t do anything for themselves,” Leon said.

Leon said the emotional toll of such discoveries can be challenging.

“I try to stay in the best mental state I can, but it can get very emotional,” she said.

Teen’s involvement began with successful rescue

Leon’s involvement with animal rescue began more than a year ago when she reunited a lost pet with its owner on her first day as a volunteer.

“We get a call that, like, we have cornered her. She is right near the highway near a bridge. So I start sprinting and running and then next thing you know, I end up cornering the dog… and I instantly feel in love with Paws Patrol,” Leon said.

Freeman praised Leon’s contributions to the organization.

“Miia has been an essential part of our team. She’s been amazing with organizing events,” Freeman said.

Leon said she faced initial rejection when she first sought volunteer opportunities due to her age, until Paws Patrol LV accepted her.

“A lot of people underestimate the youth about wanting to help the community… I am so glad Paws Patrol gave me the opportunity at a young age,” she said.

Leon has also organized fundraising events for Paws Patrol and brings attention to the group through social media. The organization remains in need of volunteers and donations to cover veterinary bills.

Holiday pet safety recommendations

Paws Patrol LV recommends pet owners take precautions during the holiday season when there is increased activity in the home like open doors and gates, road trips and off-leash activities.

The group advises pet owners to ensure microchip information is current, that pet collars include the animal’s name and current phone number and address, use baby gates to block entrances and exits, secure homes and yards, and use pet seat belts or crates when driving.
